Betung Kerihun National Park
Betung Kerihun National Park (formerly named mount Bentuang) is a national park in Kapuas Hulu regency, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. This National Park has built in 1992 and has 8.000 km² (3.100 mil²) width area. Mostly, the topography of the National Park Bullfrog Kerihun form of hills, from Muller mountain which connect mount Betung and Mount Kerihun, as well as a barrier between Indonesian region and Sarawak region, Malaysia. From the Muller mountain, flowing streams that make up the Watershed (DAS): Kapuas, Sibau, Mendalam, Bungan and Embaloh. To get to Betung Kerihun National Park you have to go through those rivers.
This National Park has eight types of forest ecosystems such as lowland forest, old secondary, Dipterocarpus, sub-montane, and montane; with high-value diversity as much as 1,216 plant species consist of 418 genera and 110 families (75% endemic to Borneo). About 14 species is a “new record” in Indonesia, including Moses lawitiensis, Neouvaria acuminatissima, Castanopsis inermis, Lithocarpus philippinensis, Chisocheton cauliflorus, Syzygium spicata and Shorea peltata, as well as 13 species of palm is a “new record” in Borneo, include; pinanga bifidovariegata and shelled (Ixora sp.).
There are about 48 species of mammals including 7 species of primates including classi (Presbytis rubicunda rubicunda), orangutan (Pongo Satyrus), klampiau (Hylobates muelleri), billowing (Presbytis frontata frontata), and kokah (P. femoral chrysomelas); 301 species of birds which consists of 151 genera and 36 families, 15 species of migratory birds, and 24 species Borneo endemic; 51 species of amphibian, 52 species of reptiles, 170 species of insects and 112 species of fish.
Animals that dominates and most frequently seen are; orangutan (Pongo Satyrus), sambar deer (Cervus unicolor brookei), tangkasi (Tarsius bancanus borneanus), Borneo gibbon (Hylobates muelleri), classi (Presbytis rubicunda rubicunda), bears (Helarctos malayanus euryspilus) , Lutra (Lutra sumatrana), and deer (Tragulus Napu borneanus).
Among Bucerotidae families in this national park, the most prominent is the towering golden bird (Aceros undulatus) and hornbills (Rhinoplax vigil) which is an animal mascot of West Kalimantan Province.
Betung Kerihung National Park has proposed as a Transboundary reserve with Lanjak Entimau Wildlife Reserve in Sarawak. Besides its diversity of plants / animals and seemed endless; the very clear water streams coming from the waterfall / cascade at the top of the hill; the sound of chirping birds and the cries of various animals, all of this wonderful things can be seen and felt in the national park.
As well as Borneo native generally, the people around the national park is largely derived from Dayak tribe. Consists of Dayak Iban, Dayak Taman and Dayak Bukat. One of the unique habit of them are using the “tattoo” on their skin.
